"The Red Raiders were highly ranked in the state and also picked to finish first in the Middlesex League. They did not disappoint their fans as they went 9-0-1, and beat teams with a margin of victory of over 20 points per game. Coach Tim Morris guided his troops into the last game of the season on Thanksgiving morning against the crosstown rival and also undefeated Wakefield Warrior football team. It was one of the greatest Thanksgiving Day games in history and when the smoke cleared it was a stalemate with a 14-14 tie. The next morning a coin was flipped to decide who would represent the Middlesex League in the Superbowl. Melrose did not win but showed class even with a controversial rule like that. ....The 1999 football team was made of great individual players who were able to play outstanding as a team, which is why they were so successful. It was the first undefeated Melrose High School Football Team in over 30 years, and will be remembered as one of the best." (Exerpt from the Class of 2000 Yearbook)
