"Predicted to he the best football team Melrose would ever have, the Red Raiders proved the experts right by capturing the League championship and the Class B co-championship with Swampscott. Led by all-scholastic tackle and captain Art Stratton, the well balanced eleven won a close game with Stoneham to start the season. Then the Raiders beat Lexington and Belmont in two relatively easy games. The shellacking Belmont received at the hands of the Raiders was only the first of many such overwhelming defeats Melrose handed its opponents this season. The Concord game proved to be the turning point of the season. Melrose squeaked by the unbeaten Concord to win 21-16 in a victory sparked by Tom Kasprzak and Dick Verge. After beating Reading in a close game, Melrose was only one victory away from the Middlesex League and Class B championships. On Thanksgiving Day the team walked away with all the honors by trouncing the Wakefield Warriors 34-6 in a game dominated by the superb passing of quarterback Jack Turco and recaptured the Halloran trophy for Melrose."
